Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the Philippines, but most cardiovascular problems are preventable. You don’t need an extreme lifestyle overhaul — just consistent small changes.
Move 30 minutes a day, every day
Notice I didn’t say “exercise” — I said move. A brisk walk, climbing stairs, dancing while cooking, or playing with your kids all count. Daily movement of any intensity outperforms intense gym sessions 2-3 times a week. Consistency beats intensity for heart health.
Cut sodium without cutting flavor
The average Filipino consumes nearly twice the recommended daily sodium. The biggest culprits aren’t always table salt — they’re patis, soy sauce, bagoong, instant noodles, and processed meats. Try replacing soy sauce with calamansi + a smaller amount of soy. Use spices and herbs to add flavor without sodium.
Know your numbers
You should know your blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, fasting blood sugar, and BMI. Most pharmacies (including ours) offer free blood pressure checks. If you’re over 40, get a full lipid panel yearly. If anything is borderline, you can usually fix it before it becomes a real problem.
If you’re on heart medication, never skip doses
Blood pressure and cholesterol medications work by maintaining steady levels in your bloodstream. Skipping a dose lets your numbers spike. The medication isn’t optional just because you “feel fine” — feeling fine is the medication doing its job.
Sleep is heart medicine
Less than 6 hours of sleep per night significantly raises your risk of heart attack and stroke. If you have sleep apnea (snoring loudly, gasping awake, exhausted despite “8 hours”), get evaluated — treating sleep apnea often lowers blood pressure as much as a medication.
