Mental health prescriptions — antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, sleep aids — are some of the most stigmatized and least understood. As pharmacists, we want our patients to know we are here for more than just dispensing pills.
Confidentiality is real, not just policy
Anything you discuss with a pharmacist about your mental health prescription is protected. We don’t tell your family, your employer, or anyone else. If you want a private consultation room, ask — every Med Seven branch has one.
Side effects: the first 2 weeks are the hardest
Most antidepressants take 2-4 weeks to start working, but side effects (nausea, headaches, vivid dreams, jitters) often hit in the first week. Many patients quit during this window thinking the medication “isn’t for them.” It usually is — push through if your prescriber agrees, and the side effects almost always settle.
Don’t stop suddenly
Mental health medications need to be tapered, not stopped cold. Suddenly stopping SSRIs can cause “discontinuation syndrome” — flu-like symptoms, dizziness, and electric-shock sensations called “brain zaps.” Always work with your prescriber on a taper plan.
Drug interactions matter more here
Mental health drugs interact with lots of other medications and even some herbal supplements (St. John’s Wort is famous for this). Always tell your pharmacist everything you’re taking, including OTC meds and supplements.
If you’re struggling between appointments
You don’t have to wait weeks to talk to someone. Our pharmacists can answer questions about dosing, missed doses, side effects, or medication concerns any time. For mental health crisis support beyond medication, call the National Center for Mental Health crisis line at 1553 (toll-free, 24/7).
