Building Strong Immunity: A Pharmacist’s Daily Routine

People often ask me what supplements I personally take to “boost” my immunity. The honest answer? Supplements are only a small part of it. Strong immunity comes from daily habits, and here’s the routine I follow as a working pharmacist.

Morning: Hydration before caffeine

Before my coffee, I drink a full glass of water with a squeeze of calamansi. Your body has been fasting for 7-8 hours and is mildly dehydrated. Vitamin C from the calamansi gives a small immune boost, and the water gets your kidneys flushing out overnight metabolic waste.

Breakfast: Protein + colorful vegetables

Your immune cells are made of protein. Without enough of it, your body can’t produce antibodies effectively. I aim for at least 20-25g of protein at breakfast — eggs, tuna, or yogurt — paired with whatever vegetables I have on hand. Color matters: different pigments mean different antioxidants.

Mid-morning: 15 minutes of sunlight

Vitamin D deficiency is shockingly common in office workers, even in tropical climates. I step outside between 9-10 AM (the UV index is still gentle) for 15 minutes. This is enough to produce meaningful vitamin D without sunburn risk.

Throughout the day: Movement breaks

Every hour I’m at my desk, I stand up, stretch, and walk for 2-3 minutes. Sedentary work suppresses immune function over time. You don’t need a gym — you need to stop sitting still for 8 hours straight.

Evening: 7-8 hours of sleep, non-negotiable

This is the most important one and the one most people skip. During deep sleep, your body produces cytokines that fight infection. Chronic sleep deprivation cuts your immune response by up to 30%. No supplement can replace it.

What about supplements?

Personally, I take vitamin D3 (especially during rainy season), zinc when I feel a cold coming on, and a probiotic if I’ve recently been on antibiotics. That’s it. Multivitamins are usually unnecessary if you eat reasonably well.
